Stress is very common among individuals these days. Stress is felt by generally all individuals irrespective of age and gender. When we are usually stressed our body responds in certain way. The scientific reason- the heart beats speed up and there is hormonal change which causes fight or flight response. The physical symptoms of these are headache, stomach upset, backache and trouble sleeping. It weakens your immune system as well. We all are well aware of these scientific reasons and changes in the body system.

But do you wonder what is the psychological causes of stress are?  Have you ever thought about it? In today’s time where we are so preoccupied with work, our mobile phones, technologies we are using, do you think these can be the cause of stress? The answer is ‘YES’, these technologies which we are adapting, mobile phones we are using throughout the day is causing lot of stress and which will lead us to nowhere. Like an example, if I had fight with my husband and they have no time to communicate with each other so they interact using the so called new app- Whatsapp. In which serious conversations are discussed, verbal words are often misunderstood and from there leads a fight between the husband and wife. I remember when I was young; my parents did fight but not through Whatsapp but personally. It is healthy to have a fight but not healthy when we are generally fighting on phones or on so called apps. What do you think?? Has anyone given a thought about it?

We generally have a dilemma that we should fight with stress but is that the solution can be applied? We need to deal with stress in a more healthy way. We need to identify our stressors or the things which are causing the people stress. Do you explain away stress as temporary even though you struggle with it every day? Do you blame your stress on other people or outside events, or view it as entirely normal and unexceptional?

Tips to help you to reduce your stress

Tip 1– Replace unhealthy ways to healthy ways

Ø  Smoking

Ø  Drinking

Ø  Overeating/ Eating Junk Food

Ø  Withdrawing from friends, family and social activities

Ø  Excessive sleeping

Ø  Zoning out for hours looking at the phone

Ø  Taking out your stress on others

If your methods of coping with stress aren’t contributing to your greater emotional and physical health, it’s time to find healthier ones. No single method works, you need to experiment and combine certain methods which helps you to calm yourself and in control.

Tip 2– The four A’s – Avoid, Alter, Adapt and Accept

Avoid unnecessary stressors like learn to say “NO”, avoid people who stress you out and take control of your environment.

Alter the situation like express your feelings instead of bottling them up; be willing to compromise like as it’s said when you want to change others, you need to change yourself first. Create a balanced schedule where you give time for work, family, friends and social activities.

Adapt to the stressor means reframe the problems, try to view stressful situations from a more positive perspective. Adjust your standards- you don’t need to be perfect, even though you fail, it is okay to learn from it and move on. Practice gratitude- when stress is causing you to go down take a moment to reflect, this can give you an insight of yourself and the situation.

Accept the things you can’t change, don’t try to control situations or people around you, learn to forgive and most importantly share your feelings.

Tip 3– Connect to others

Connect to the person who makes you comfortable, you feel safe and understood. Do keep in mind that people you talk to don’t have to fix your stress; it is “YOU” who can change your own stressors.

Understand the network of people, who are around you, you can talk to a professional who can help you like a psychologist, counsellor, homeopathy doctor etc.

Tip 4– Use relaxation techniques

Relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, sound therapy and deep breathing techniques can help activate the body’s relaxation response, a state of restfulness that is the opposite of the fight or flight response. As you practice these techniques, the stress levels decrease and you mind and body becomes calm and relaxed.
