Peak 5179 became the dream for Karan, the character of Hrithik Roshan in Lakshya (Bollywood film) and he conquers it from the enemy in very difficult conditions. In the movie after completing college this protagonist did not have any clue of his purpose of life or what he wanted to really do, joining army was only a result of following his friend like a sheep following the herd. What I felt truly remarkable was how the protagonist found his purpose, got direction and how this changed his life quite later in his life. Like Karan, I haven’t achieved my Lakshya yet, but just like Karan I have had a late start towards finding my purpose.
Life has changed for me in the last few years the reason being, I have tried to question myself more often. If you had to take only one message from this blog I would say be a ‘Learner’ for life.
When young I was aware of the fact that I had to complete 10 years of schooling and 5-6 years of college. Only the ones who were aware of what they wanted to be at the end of this learning curve, achieved it because they had their goals in mind. However, for most of us it was just scoring on that unit test or getting that homework on time. I took life as it came and never challenged or asked for more. Was it lack of thought provoking by my teachers or parents, or was it just me who couldn’t find my purpose? Was I taught to ask enough of why’s and what ifs? As you would expect, upon completion of school, followed my friends and then my father into business. Sounds like a usual story, ain’t it? Fate of a lot of us who do not have our own set of dreams is heading towards a borrowed life.
When I was in my mid- 30s and I was probably fed up with the mediocre life I was living so I started to question myself more often. Do I have the end goal of my life figured out? What would life be when I am 70? If only I could imagine and try to work towards it, I would be able to achieve it. One of the best things that happened to me during this time, was inspiration to read from my uncle. This changed my life completely. I soon started falling in love with books and was eventually addicted to it. Books made me question- Can I achieve more in my lifetime then what I currently aspire to be? So what if I am late, we hear great stories about people who have hit gold mines even in their 50-60’s. Well it’s never too late to realise your life’s purpose. Warren buffet says: “When I was sixteen, I had just two things on my mind – girls and cars. I wasn’t very good with girls. So I thought about cars. I thought about girls, too, but I had more luck with cars. Let’s say that when I turned sixteen, a genie had appeared to me. And that genie said, ‘Warren, I’m going to give you the car of your choice. It’ll be here tomorrow morning with a big bow tied on it. Brand-new. And it’s all yours.’ Having heard all the genie stories, I would say, ‘What’s the catch?’ And the genie would answer, ‘There’s only one catch. This is the last car you’re ever going to get in your life. So it’s got to last a lifetime.’ If that had happened, I would have picked out that car. But, can you imagine, knowing it had to last a lifetime, what I would do with it? I would read the manual about five times. I would always keep it garaged. If there was the least little dent or scratch, I’d have it fixed right away because I wouldn’t want it rusting. I would baby that car, because it would have to last a lifetime. That’s exactly the position you are in concerning your mind and body. You only get one mind and one body. And it’s got to last a lifetime. Now, it’s very easy to let them ride for many years. But if you don’t take care of that mind and that body, they’ll be a wreck forty years later, just life the car would be. It’s what you do right now, today, that determines how your mind and body will operate ten, twenty, and thirty years from now.”
Through science and technology we might be able to replace a few organs, but who likes second hand. One of the ways to live a self-fulfilling life is to ‘Learn’ constantly. It could be a new sport, or a new cuisine, a form of dance, a music instrument, or anything that interests oneself.
Let me share a little personal experience. I recently started training for Lawn Tennis and because I like to learn and get involved in whatever I take up, it made me question about the casual, mediocre cricketer in me. Can I improve my cricketing skills? I am in my mid 30’s where sport is just a way to keep my body active but if taken up in the right attitude it can keep our mind fit and active as well. It’s about connecting the dots really. Apply and align things from one walk of life and use it in other, be a bit more alert, wouldn’t life be really wonderful?
“Educated men are superior to uneducated men as the living are to dead.” said Aristotle. It resonates with my life. I sure want to keep learning my entire life. I am going to reflect back on this blog in a few years down the line and I hope it all still makes sense. I sincerely hope I continue to learn and evolve, just as the supreme boss wanted us to be. To all the late learners who are reading this, remember, late is better than never after all!
I leave you with this quote that “Those who love wisdom must be inquirers into many things indeed.” -Heraclitus. Happy Learning! –
