What is URTICARIA?
Urticaria, also known as hives, is a skin condition that causes red, itchy, and swollen bumps or welts to appear on the skin. The welts can vary in size and shape and can occur anywhere on the body.

Symptoms of URTICARIA include:
- Slightly raised, pink or red, circular or oval or worm-like patches on the skin.
- Occur alone or in a group, or join together to form larger patches.
- Uncontrollable itching or burning with a stinging kind of pain.
- Swelling usually subsides within 24 hours at one spot but may appear at another spot
- Hives are experienced every time patient is exposed to one or more triggers.
- Chronic hives can last for months or even years together.
- Dermatographism: When scratched or pressed with a fingernail or any object, skin shows raised eruptions which stay there for some time.
- Angioedema: The deeper layers of skin are affected which usually occurs near the eyes, cheeks, lips, hands, etc., and in life-threatening conditions, throat, windpipe, lungs, etc.
What causes URTICARIA?
Urticaria is caused due to various factors:
- Foods: such as shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, fish, and milk are the most common culprits.
- Medications: Most common medicines that can cause hives are penicillin, aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and blood pressure medications.
- Allergens: Substances that commonly cause hives are pollen, latex, animal dander, and insect stings.
- Environmental factors: Physical factors such as heat, cold, water, sunlight, pressure, exercise, and emotional stress.
- Underlying medical conditions: Certain illnesses such as thyroid conditions, bacterial and viral infections such as hepatitis, HIV, Cytomegalovirus, or Epstein-Barr virus; cancers such as lymphoma, blood transfusions, etc are also known to trigger hives.
- Psychological causes: Above all the physical causes, the most common factor we have seen in our patients is the link between major emotional disturbances with urticaria. When a patient is undergoing a major emotional setback, stress, fear, anxiety, sadness, and insecurities, the immunological state is altered which leads to hypersensitivity and urticaria.
